Hackney Council Speaker, 2006-2007

I am the Speaker of Hackney for 2006-2007. I been a councillor for Haggerston Ward since 2002. I was the Deputy Speaker of Hackney Council in 2005-2006 and Chair of the Hackney Labour Group in 2004-2005.

I was born in Nigeria where I went to school before coming to England and attending college and university here. I am a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and hold an LLB (Hons) and Masters in Employment and Human Resources Management. I am goal-oriented HR practitioner with records of achievement in corporate governance, human resources development and community cohesion.

Among my commitments as a councillor and the Speaker of the council, I chair meetings of the full Council, and sits on the Standards Committee and Licensing Committee. I am a trustee and non-executive Director of KICC, an Honorary President of Age Concern Hackney, a Director of Hackney Homes, an Associate Governor of Gayhurst School, and I have served on a number of Housing and Regeneration Partnership Boards.

I am a devout Christian and have lived in Hackney for over 13 years. I am very happily married to Gbolahan and am the proud mother of three children.
